As a boy growing up in Western Oklahoma in the 70’s there was one baseball player above all others, and that was Binger OK native Johnny Bench. He has been acknowledged as the greatest catcher of all time, and offensively and defensively he made a strong case, but this year Ivan Rodriguez is making a bid to challenge him.

As a fan of the Rangers since they showed up in Arlington, to see Pudge getting this acclaim is a good thing. Since Bench retired, I don’t know of another catcher I’d have rather had behind the plate for my team.

Both had rocket arms, and were dangerous outs for the opposing battery. But both played the game with a smile and joy. I don’t know if we’ll ever settle this argument, but it’s one pleasant dilemma I’m sure enjoying.

Not a big baseball fan, but I know of Bench and would cheer for Rangers over anyone else.
